Peripheral neuropathy

Numbness, tingling and nerve pain

Peripheral neuropathy is damage to the nerves outside the brain and spinal cord. It usually starts in the feet and hands.

Common symptoms

  • Numbness, tingling or burning
  • Weakness or clumsiness
  • Poor balance, especially in the dark

These symptoms have many possible causes. If you are worried, speak to your doctor or get in touch.

How it's diagnosed

A neurological examination, blood tests and nerve conduction studies to confirm the problem and find its cause.

What treatment looks like

01

Treating the cause

Where one is found, for example a vitamin deficiency or a medication effect.

02

Symptom relief

Medicines for nerve pain and practical steps to protect the hands and feet.

03

After chemotherapy

Monitoring and, where possible, adjusting treatment with your oncology team.

Your plan depends on your diagnosis, scans and circumstances, and is agreed with you.
